What to expect
Short call: 4–6 hours in port · Colombo
Enough for the city itself and no more. The open-top double-decker city tour, the temples, the fort and the markets, with time to spare before sail-away.
- Gangaramaya Temple
- Independence Square
- The Old Parliament Building and the fort
- Pettah Market
- Galle Face Green
- Lotus Tower photo stop
Full-day call: 8–10 hours in port · Colombo
Comfortably enough for Galle Fort down the expressway, or for Kandy and Pinnawala inland. Both are real days out with margin built in.
- Galle Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ramparts and the lighthouse
- or Kandy: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Pinnawala
- Madu River boat safari and the turtle hatchery, on the Galle route
- Lunch included
Long call: 12+ hours in port · Colombo
The only window in which the Cultural Triangle genuinely works. Sigiriya and Dambulla are four hours north, so this needs most of a day, and we will tell you plainly if your times do not allow it.
- Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress
- Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
- Traditional Sri Lankan lunch
Hambantota: Calling at Hambantota
The southern port puts the dry-zone national parks within easy reach, with Galle a comfortable run west along the coast.
- Yala or Udawalawe jeep safari
- Galle Fort and the southern coast
- Whale watching in season
Trincomalee: Calling at Trincomalee
Everything worth seeing is close to the harbour here, which makes even a short call worthwhile.
- Koneswaram Temple and Swami Rock
- Fort Frederick
- Nilaveli Beach
- Pigeon Island snorkelling
- Whale watching, May to September

Best time to go
Cruise calls cluster into the northeast-monsoon months from November to April for the west and south coasts, and May to September for Trincomalee on the east. Because the two coasts run on opposite monsoons, there is no month in which a Sri Lankan port call is a write-off. It only changes which route we would send you on.
Frequently asked questions
Will we get back to the ship on time?
Every route is built backwards from your sail-away time with a margin built in, and we would rather turn down a request than run it too tight. If what you are asking for does not fit your call, we will tell you so before you book.
Where exactly do we meet you?
At the terminal gate, with a name board. Private vehicles are not permitted alongside the berth at Sri Lankan ports, so there is a short shuttle or walk from the gangway to the gate.
Is this cheaper than the ship’s own excursion?
Usually, and it is certainly more private: your own vehicle and guide rather than a shared coach. The trade-off is that an independent excursion is your own arrangement, so we build in more margin than the ship’s operator does.
Can we reach Sigiriya on a port call?
Only on a very long call. Sigiriya is roughly four hours from Colombo each way. If your ship is in for twelve hours or more it works; for anything shorter, Galle or Kandy is the honest answer.
Can you handle a large group?
Yes. The fleet runs from sedans up to 50-seat coaches, so anything from two passengers to a full ship group can be covered. Tell us the numbers and we will size it.
What if the ship arrives late?
We track the arrival and wait. The route is then shortened to whatever the remaining time genuinely allows, and we tell you what has been dropped rather than rushing everything.
