Overview
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and heavily fortified by the Dutch in the 17th, its ramparts, lighthouse and colonial streets still intact above the Indian Ocean. It sits roughly 120km south of Colombo along the coastal highway, a journey of under two hours each way.

How the day runs
Morning: Down the coast to the Madu River
The southern expressway makes this the easiest of the day trips: Galle is about 120km from Colombo and under two hours away. We break the drive at Balapitiya for a boat safari through the Madu River mangroves.
- Hotel, airport or port pickup
- Madu River boat safari
- Mangrove forests and their birdlife
- Cinnamon Island
- Spice and herbal garden
Late morning: The turtle hatchery at Kosgoda
A short hop south, the hatchery works with eggs recovered from the beaches. There are tanks of hatchlings, a few resident adults that could not be released, and, if the timing lands, a release into the surf.
- Sea turtle hatchery
- Hatchling tanks
- Turtle release, when one is scheduled
Midday: Galle Fort
Portuguese-built in the 16th century, heavily refortified by the Dutch in the 17th, and still lived in: a grid of low colonial houses, churches, galleries and cafés inside a sea wall you can walk the whole way round. Lunch is inside the walls.
- The Dutch ramparts
- Galle lighthouse
- The old town streets and boutiques
- The Dutch Reformed Church
- Lunch inside the fort
Afternoon: Koggala, Unawatuna and the coast road back
East of Galle the stilt fishermen perch on their poles in the shallows; west of it, Unawatuna’s sheltered bay and reef are a good swimming stop before turning back north.
- Koggala stilt fishermen
- Unawatuna beach and the coral reef
- Swimming and beach time
- Scenic coastal drive back to Colombo

- Pickup

Best time to go
The south coast is at its driest and calmest from December to March, which is also when the sea is best for swimming at Unawatuna. The fort itself is worth walking in any month: the ramparts catch a breeze even in the heat, and a monsoon sky over the lighthouse is no bad thing.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Colombo to Galle?
Under two hours each way on the southern expressway, for about 120km. It is the shortest of our day trips, which is why there is time for the Madu River, the turtle hatchery and the coast as well as the fort itself.
Is the Madu River boat safari included?
The vehicle, chauffeur guide, fuel, parking, tolls, Galle Fort entrance and lunch are included. The boat safari and the hatchery are the standard stops on the way down and we will quote them with the day. Tell us on WhatsApp which of them you want.
Can we swim?
Yes. Unawatuna is the usual stop, a sheltered bay with a reef close in. Bring swimwear and a towel. Between May and September the southwest monsoon can make the sea rough, and your guide will tell you honestly when it is not a swimming day.
Are the stilt fishermen genuine?
The practice is genuine and it is still done, but at the roadside spots near Koggala the men on the poles are largely posing for photographs and will expect a small payment. Your guide will tell you what is reasonable before you get out of the vehicle.
Does this work as a cruise shore excursion from Colombo port?
It is the best of the options for a shorter call: Galle is close enough that even a half-day in port leaves time for the fort. Send us your call and sail-away times and we will build the route to fit them.
Should we stay overnight instead?
Galle Fort after dark, once the day visitors have gone, is a different and better place. If you have the time, the 3-day Southern Coast private tour gives you that plus Mirissa whale watching and the beaches.
